The day in short

Temples, bamboo
and the open sea.

Japan’s medieval capital sits an hour from Tokyo, where Zen temples and a bronze Buddha stand within sight of the Pacific.

  • Private transportation with a professional English-speaking guide
  • Door-to-door pickup and drop-off within Tokyo’s 23 wards
  • The Great Buddha at Kōtoku-in and Hase-dera Temple
  • Hōkoku-ji’s bamboo grove and Tsurugaoka Hachimangū Shrine
  • Komachi-dōri’s food street, or the island scenery of Enoshima
  • Fuel, highway tolls and parking already included

Where the day takes you

The itinerary.
Yours to adjust.

Your guide coordinates the route, timing and photo stops around your interests, the weather and seasonal conditions. Nothing here is fixed.

  1. 01

    Hōkoku-ji Temple and bamboo grove

A grove of towering bamboo behind quiet temple grounds, with a tea house where you can sit among the stems.

  2. 02

    Tsurugaoka Hachimangū Shrine

Kamakura’s most important Shinto shrine, approached along a broad avenue that runs straight through the old city.

  3. 03

    Hase-dera Temple

Landscaped gardens climbing a hillside to elevated sea views, and the celebrated Kannon statue in the main hall.

  4. 04

    Kōtoku-in and the Great Buddha

The bronze Buddha has sat in the open air since a tsunami took the hall around it in 1498. Thirteen metres, and utterly still.

  5. 05

    Komachi-dōri

A lively shopping street of local snacks, speciality shops and cafés, the place to eat your way slowly back to the car.

  6. 06

    Enoshima

An island of viewpoints, shrines and seaside promenades, reached by a causeway. An alternative to Komachi-dōri rather than an addition.

Private group pricing

One price

6–8 guests$1,000

Good to know

Before you book.

Everything that affects your day, in plain language. If anything here is unclear, message us before booking and we will answer properly.

How long is the day, and what time is pickup?+

The tour runs approximately 10 hours door-to-door. Pickup is normally between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM from hotels, apartments or stations within Tokyo’s 23 wards. Your exact pickup time is confirmed after booking, and the start time can be adjusted on request.

How much walking is there, and are there a lot of steps?+

More than you might expect. Temple paths are uneven, Hase-dera climbs a hillside, and Enoshima in particular involves a good many stairs. Walking is otherwise light to moderate. Wear comfortable shoes, and tell us in advance about any mobility needs. The route can be built to avoid the worst of the climbing.

Will we visit all six stops in one day?+

No. Komachi-dōri and Enoshima are alternatives to each other, and a comfortable day fits about four or five. Tell your guide whether you would rather finish with food and shopping or with island and coast, and the day is planned around it.

Do I need cash?+

Yes, bring some. Temple and shrine admissions run about ¥300 to ¥500 per person and are paid at the gate, and many of the small shops along Komachi-dōri prefer yen. An IC card covers some of it, but cash is the safe answer in Kamakura.

Are children welcome, and are child seats available?+

Families are very welcome. The Great Buddha and the beach both go down well with children. Child seats are available on request; please tell us in advance with each child’s age. Do also let us know about any dietary restrictions or allergies before the day.

What should I wear and bring?+

Comfortable walking shoes above all, given the steps and uneven temple paths. Seasonal clothing, with a layer for the coast, which is breezier than inland. Umbrellas are provided on rainy days, subject to availability. The tour operates rain or shine.

Where can you pick me up, and are there rules in the vehicle?+

One pickup and one drop-off within Tokyo’s 23 wards are included: hotels, apartments or stations. Pickup from other locations can usually be arranged for an additional fee, subject to availability. Airport and cruise terminal transfers are a separate service, bookable from our Transfers page. For everyone’s comfort and safety, smoking, fireworks and hazardous items are not permitted inside the vehicle.

What is the cancellation policy?+

Cancellations 72 hours or more before the start time receive a 95% refund. Cancellations 24–72 hours before receive an 80% refund. Cancellations under 24 hours are non-refundable. These percentages are final and already account for transaction and refund-processing costs. Booking changes are subject to availability.
